CHAPTER EIGHT

Renner

“You’re crazy,” Renner’s boss sighed through the phone, the slight British accent more pronounced when he was angry.

I’ve said the same thing to myself a thousand times today. “Got a personal thing to handle. Just clear my schedule for the rest of the week, or pass them off to someone else.”

“Please, don’t tell me this is about that overnight client.”

He clamped his teeth together. Is it that obvious?

“What did I say when we first met?” Duane’s voice turned sharp, and cold. “You don’t get involved with clients. The second they get attached, you drop them.”

“That’s not it, Duane.”

Kinda the other way around.

“Then what? You feeling dodgy or something?”

Renner rolled his eyes. Repeating himself was getting on his nerves. “Something in my private life I have to handle.”

“Knights don’t have a private life, Shaw. The job is your life.”

He took a deep breath to calm his rising blood pressure. He remembered their first conversations about becoming a Knight. The time commitment, the physical maintenance and appearance standards, and most importantly the strict protocol of no personal romances interfering with work. All of it seemed like a breeze to his already bachelor lifestyle, the bodyguard experience, and lack of relationships since his return home from overseas.

They’d both made it sound so easy for a Marine like Renner. How so many women had specifically requested the soldier look. His scars were sure to be a huge turn on, they’d said. They’d promised his calendar would be as full as he wanted. He’d never go hungry.

The money aspect depicted was right. There was plenty of dough in this business. It wasn’t the cash he was after.

Cassie had pulled the sole motivation out from his soul with the smallest effort.

He wanted a purpose.

Renner wasn’t quite sure if she was that purpose, but he knew it was in her direction. He had to devote more time to find out.

“Look, I get it.” Duane’s voice simmered. “You haven’t really had a break since you started. Why don’t you take a vacation? I know a guy in Vegas. He’ll set you up in a suite. Dorian can go with you. Great place to let off some steam, go out on the lash, and who knows…you might love it there. Maybe expand the business into new territory. There’s huge money in—”

“Duane.”

This guy really doesn’t listen.

“Huh?”

“I’ll call you in a few days.” Renner ended the call and shoved the phone in his pocket. After climbing into his truck, he glanced at the takeout bags in the passenger seat. The scent of Teriyaki filled the cabin, and he couldn’t wait to dig into the honey chicken. Chinese food. He’d noticed a magnet on Cassie’s fridge with the number to a local delivery place. He prayed she’d like this.

Would like him. Out of the Knight role.

His heart hammered against his ribs. He scrutinized his reflection in the rearview mirror. A sheen formed at his hairline just as his belly filled with a swirling sandstorm.

What are you doing? She’s a client. You’ve known her for two days.
